ESOC 2021 will be Virtual

ESOC 2021 has taken the necessary decision to go virtual. Unfortunately, travel restrictions and health requirements due to the global COVID-19 pandemic are likely to remain in place until at least September 2021.

Fortunately, it is not our first virtual event. ESOC 2021 will use a new and better virtual platform enabling more live sessions, meeting possibilities, and better interactions to advance stroke science. The success of ESO-WSO 2020 – online - was thanks to all of you joining from your homes, offices and workspaces around the globe. We are confident of adapting once more to the virtual world while benefitting from even better conference technologies!

Opportunities for interaction and engagement will be complemented with a showcase of high-quality science through presentations of research studies, large clinical trials, and live discussions with the investigators. The virtual environment will also make it easier to view and discuss the latest developments with our industry partners.

2021 has many unknowns, but some things are clear: we are focusing our efforts on treating patients and research to improve all aspects of stroke care – both are now more important than ever. ESOC 2021 will enable the stroke community to meet to make it all happen.

Late Breaking Abstract Submission Notification* End July 2021

*Note all efforts are made to send notification by the planned date. Should there be any delays with the selection process, revised date will be posted here

** Late Breaking Abstract Submission will open after the Regular Submission closes and will occur from June 1st until July 6th, 2021. The Late Breaking Abstract Submission is not an extension of the Regular Submission deadline and will be available for Clinical Trials Topics only! Submission will include a free text box under the description section and a request to explain what is novel about the new data and why the new analyses should be considered as late breaking. The content of the abstract should not have been previously published or presented at national or international meetings prior to ESOC 2021.

Important please read:

The ongoing trials topic – is only for proposed posters that will describe the design and/or progress of ongoing trials – trials that will not have closed in time to present results at ESOC 2021, (September 1-3).

Note: Abstracts that describe as yet unfinished trials that will complete in time to present results at ESOC 2021 and that are intended as placeholder abstracts for late-breaking results should be submitted to the main abstract submission, under the most relevant trial topic. There, you will find an option to indicate that it is a placeholder abstract.

Results of clinical trials that will complete after this deadline (but in time to release results in a late-breaking session) can be submitted to the late breaking trials section. This section is open from 1 June 2021 to 6 July 2021. If you anticipate having a late-breaking trial, you are encouraged to submit a placeholder abstract now to the regular system. This abstract can describe the trial and the analyses that will be available. This will assist the conference committee in reserving a suitable slot on the programme and you can update your abstract with results during the late breaking submission window.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are delighted to invite you to the 7th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC 2021), which will be held virtually on 1-3 September 2021.

ESOC is the leading forum in Europe for advances in research and clinical care of patients with cerebrovascular diseases, as demonstrated by the huge attendance at ESOC 2019, and an increasing number of abstracts submitted year on year, with more than 3050 abstracts received in 2020, our joint meeting with WSO, being the largest yet.

The graph on the right, with the increasingly steep trajectory, showcases the participant numbers from previous ESOC meetings 2015-2019.

This is an important time to be in stroke research. Stroke researchers have made huge progress in preventing and treating acute stroke, and are now making inroads into the many other ways in which vascular disease affects the brain, including dementia.

Despite the global disruption since spring 2020 due to COVID-19, ESOC 2021 will see presentations of major clinical trials, a packed scientific programme with state-of-the-art seminars, proffered scientific communications of the latest research, and debates about current controversies.

Stroke affects the brain in diverse ways: we encourage all clinical and preclinical researchers and clinical service providers, from all disciplines working in stroke care and research, to attend – there will be something for all, and knowledge about stroke will advance faster with the widest inclusion. The meeting is shaped by you, for you.

We look forward to you all joining us in September 2021 – it will be a delight to meet all friends and colleagues, network and forge new collaborations, and be able to focus on the many diverse aspects of cerebrovascular diseases and improving the care of our patients.

Warm regards,

Martin Dichgans
