Important: please read the information below before submitting an abstract

The conference in 2024 is being organised as an ‘in person’ event at Newcastle University. You would only be able to present your paper remotely if are based in a country on the DAC List of countries entitled to development assistance. In this case, you would be able present your accepted paper online without charge; however, please note you would only be able to attend the smaller number of sessions that will be held simultaneously in person and online.

The conference welcomes paper, symposium, and poster submissions from academics, researchers, practitioners, educators, policy-makers, the third sector, students, and those interested in researching ageing and later life.

Please note, the process for submitting an abstract to the Emerging Researchers in Ageing (ERA) Pre-Conference Event will be handled separately. If you would like to be contacted about submitting an ERA Pre-Conference Event abstract when the call for papers comes out, please register your interest here. Please note that there will be a small additional charge if you wish to attend the Emerging Researchers in Ageing Pre-Conference Event alongside the main conference.

The conference theme is ‘New Directions in Ageing and the Life Course’ and papers that address this theme are encouraged. However, we do not want to be overly prescriptive. A non-exclusive list of areas typically covered at BSG conferences include the following:

  • Ageing in a global context
  • Work and retirement
  • Business, ageing and consumption
  • Social care
  • Health and ageing
  • Theories, methods & critical perspectives
  • Environments for ageing
  • Social participation, citizenship & the welfare state
  • Connections & relationships
  • Unequal ageing and the life-course
  • Technology and ageing
  • Arts and Culture

However, you will not be asked to submit your paper against a stream, as we know it is not always straightforward choosing one topic area. Instead, the organisers will prioritise streaming papers in sessions with papers on similar topics wherever possible.

Accepted presenters will be asked to register by the early bird deadline of 28th April 2024 in order to secure their place in the programme.

For any queries about the 2024 Annual Conference, please contact bsgconference2024@britishgerontology.org

Oral and poster presentations

  • Abstract title word limit: 30 words
  • Abstract word limit: 250 words
  • Maximum number of references: 5 (optional, included in word limit)
  • Headings: Unstructured abstract with no tables, diagrams or pictures

Prospective authors are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words with sufficient detail to allow the committee to judge the merit of the submission. In the submission form you will be asked to indicate your preferred type of presentation (oral, poster or oral-as-part-of-a-symposium) and you will need the following information as a minimum: title, abstract, authors and affiliations. Please note, only select oral-as-part-of-a-symposium if you have been invited by a symposium convenor to present as part of a specific symposium.

The title and abstract you submit will be used in the final programme so please ensure you have proofread and corrected any errors. You do not have to include references, but if you do these must be included in the 250 word limit.

You can submit no more than two abstracts as the lead author. However, there is no limit on the number of abstracts in which someone can appear as a co-author. The Scientific Committee will aim to reduce conflict in scheduling multiple presentations where someone is named as a co-author, however we cannot guarantee this. A submission of an abstract with multiple authors will be an indication that all authors approve the submission and content of the abstract.

If your abstract is part of a symposium and the symposium convener has already submitted the symposium, you will be invited to connect your completed abstract to the symposium. Please ensure you use the same email address for your submission as in the symposium submission. If the symposium has not already been submitted you can attach your abstract to it later through the Oxford Abstracts dashboard. If you have any questions or need support with this please contact us by emailing bsgconference2024@britishgerontology.org

How will poster sessions be organised?

The poster sessions are an important part of the BSG conference. You will interact with attendees and discuss the research through small Teams meetings, each with maximum five poster presenters. If you are a student poster presenter, you may become our next winner of the Stirling Prize (£100). For more details on the Stirling Prize click here Stirling Prize Guidelines

If you are a student entering a poster, you may wish to be considered for the BSG's Stirling Prize. Further information on this is available here Please enter the information in the questions labelled 'Stirling Student Prize'. If you are not student or you are not entering a poster you can leave these questions blank.

Welcome to the British Society of Gerontology 53rd Annual Conference, 3– 5 July 2024, Newcastle University, United Kingdom

The British Society of Gerontology Annual Conference attracts around 400 delegates from around the world, made up of academics and others interested in a wide range of issues related to ageing. The conference in 2024 will be held in the Newcastle Helix, a global centre for urban innovation in the heart of the city that brings together academia, the public sector, communities, and business. It is a short distance from the railway station, hotels, restaurants, pubs, historical landmarks, and the Civic Centre, the conference dinner venue. Newcastle University has a longstanding commitment to research on ageing, and the conference is being organised by the Centre for Ageing and Inequalities.

The theme this year will be New Directions in Ageing and the Life Course. We hope this will encourage us to collectively explore how the lives of older people, and research on ageing, are changing in the context of social, political, and economic transformations. To help us explore these issues, we are delighted to welcome three superb Keynote Speakers: Professor Phyllis Moen from the University of Minnesota; Professor Judith Phillips from the University of Stirling; and Professor Cathrine Degnen from Newcastle University. Expanding our geographical focus, we will also explore new directions through an exciting Flagship Symposium; this will bring together academics from countries entitled to development assistance to discuss the situation of older people in their respective countries.

In addition to the main conference, the Emerging Researchers in Ageing (ERA) pre-conference session will give early career researchers (ECRs) the opportunity to present their research, engage in workshops, and network with other ECRs. It welcomes presentations on ageing-related topics from early career researchers at all stages. To register interest for the Emerging Researchers in Ageing (ERA) pre-conference session and be emailed when the call for abstracts comes out, click here.

We look forward to welcoming you to Newcastle in July 2024!

All the best,

David Lain and the Conference Organising Committee
