Abstract Guidelines

Please read the guidelines below carefully. Abstracts not submitted in this format may not be considered for review. If you have any difficulties or queries about the abstract format, please contact the ASM Secretariat by email intensivecareasm@encanta.com.au.

Only abstracts submitted in English will be reviewed.

Abstracts are to be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx) only via the ASM website, and in the specified format – please refer to the sample abstract template.

  • Text should be single spaced throughout, in Arial 10 point font.
  • Text should not contain subheadings, underlines or bold type.
  • Abstracts must have a maximum of 2000 characters (approximately 300 words). Character count is verified by the submission site and includes blank spaces, punctuation, symbols, returns, etc.
  • Abstracts should not have been published in any English language medical or nursing peer reviewed journal, and in general should not have been presented at more than one meeting from which such publications arise. Studies with substantial changes in methodology and/or with substantial additional data may be submitted, presented and published a second time, but rewritten abstracts on the same study should not.
  • Each abstract will only be eligible for one (1) award only.

Abstract headings should contain the following:

  • Title in sentence case throughout.
  • One line space prior to text commencement.
  • Wherever possible the title should be precise so that it conveys a message – e.g. “High Dose Adrenaline Does Not Improve In-Hospital Survival From Cardiac Arrest”.

Please note that a blind review process will be conducted. You will be asked to provide author names and affiliations in the online submission process (authors must be listed in order of involvement), however please do not include this information on your Word document abstract.

Abstracts should contain brief but complete statements of:

  • Introduction
  • Objectives
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusion(s)
  • The abstract must contain sufficient information so that, if it is published in the proceedings of the ASM or in a journal, it will be a complete report independent of the presentation. Accepted authors will be contacted regarding journal publication options in early 2023.
  • The text should not contain statements alluding to results or conclusions not presented in the text; abstracts stating “will be discussed”, “will be described” or “will be presented” will be rejected.
  • Abstracts should be written in the past tense, i.e. should state what was done, not what is being, should or will be done.
  • Use only standard abbreviations (“Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals” http://www.icmje.org/). Non standard abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and defined in parentheses in the text. In general, no more than two non-standard abbreviations should appear and these should only be used to replace words appearing four times or more in the text. Use SI units except for pressure; use cmH2O or mmHg with kPa units in brackets (optional).
  • Abstracts containing graphs, diagrams, or complex tables will not be accepted. Simple tables are acceptable.
  • Brief acknowledgments of supporting institutions or funding may be made at the end of the text and are not included in the word count.
  • References are not to be included.

Abstracts received after the closing date will not be accepted.

It is the responsibility of the submitting author to view and proof the file to ensure your abstract has been uploaded successfully. In addition you may submit an additional abstract; replace your abstract with a revised copy; or when available, register for the ASM.

  • Presentations must be checked by the presenter with the audio-visual technician in the speakers’ preparation room as soon as possible after registering at the ASM venue.

Message from the Conference Organising Committee

The ANZICS/ACCCN Annual Scientific Meeting, which incorporates the annual Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Conference, will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, from 29 – 31 March 2023. The Annual Scientific Meeting will be the preeminent critical care conference in Australasia for the calendar year and will be an important platform that will allow doctors, nurses and allied health practitioners to meaningfully connect and discuss new developments and research in the field of intensive and critical care.

Critical care straddles ‘the edge’; the edge of life and death, the extremes of physiological and emotional endurance and the boundaries of science, innovation and technology. The ASM, held on the picturesque edge of the Southern Ocean, and over three days will explore and celebrate the theme of “ICU on the Edge”.

As always the program will include keynote speakers in the forefront of Intensive Care and we anticipate they will attract great interest from delegates. The ASM provides an ideal opportunity to network with professionals, make new contacts and establish important relationships with leading intensive care professionals.

We sincerely hope you can join us in this vibrant meeting and we look forward to a memorable and mutually rewarding experience in Adelaide in 2023.

Adelaide is a spectacular host city for the ASM, as the capital city of South Australia is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes. Adelaide is a city for people of all ages and abilities to explore; with a wide range of sports and recreation, schools, universities, libraries and community centres that bring people together to learn and converse. Adelaide has an enviable food and lively dining scene experienced through a network of buzzing laneways, small bars, restaurants and pubs on nearly every corner. There is ever-widening access to the arts. Cultural venues and monuments that open eyes and challenge minds or the more measured pace offered by trails through the Park Lands, where people keep fit, commute or simply take time out to relax and unwind. Adelaide is a truly magical place. There’s so much to see, do and immerse yourself in.

The Local Organising Committee look forward to welcoming all delegates to Adelaide.
